Now I've been on a reading slump and am two Foley's behind, but I'll get to them. Is Foley's writing quite purple? yeah. Are her characters over the top (one hero managed to fight off and defend the heroine from at least five villians)? yeah. Are her books fun? oh yeah.
To me, I suppose Foley would be defined as a guilty pleasure. No she is not Laura Kinsale. But as much as I love and worship LK, I couldn't survive on a diet of just LK. The books are too rich, too deep and too emotional. As great as chateubriand is, sometimes you just want a cheeseburger.
Foley's books are well written (ok, we'll disagree on this on, Beth), well paced and has interesting (if over the top) characters. They are fun. Pure and simple, FUN! And to be quite honest, I find her more accurate and less wallpapery in her background information than say Julia Quinn (my pet peeve).
