Life should NOT be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an attractive and well preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways, chocolate in one hand, wine in the other, body thoroughly used up, totally worn out and screaming "WOO HOO what a ride!"
For the past 36 years, I have always underestimated Boise State's football team. We're always been good, but I never have admitted how damn good.
And they do funky ass things to me. In the 1980 Division 1-AA Championship, with less than a minute to go, Boise state was losing. I was driving around in my car and listening to the game. Not wanting to hear the loss, I changed channels. I flipped back over a few minutes later to hear that BSU won their biggest game ever.
Biggest until now. It was so cool that BSU managed to break into the bowl picture, the only non-BSC team to play in a major bowl game, the Fiesta Bowl. But hey, let's not get overly excited, we're playing Oklahoma. Yeah, that Oklahoma, the University of Oklahoma. The team that many have said if they hadn't gotten cheated out of the Oregon State game, would be playing in the National Championship against Ohio State. That Oklahoma.
I hate suspense. So I don't watch the big games. One of these days I'll learn. I just flip over to the game occasionally to check the score. Boise State led Oklahoma in the first 58 minutes of the game. Been the boom dropped. Oklahoma scored. There was less than a minute to go. So I went to bed. I should have known better. They've been doing it to me for decades.
BOISE STATE FREAKING WON!!!!!!!! BSU BEAT OKLAHOMA IN OVERTIME.
Several other BSU notes: Running Back Ian Johnson (Heisman Trophy candidate, leading rusher in the country) after scoring the winning 2 point conversion, got down on his knee and on national television proposed to his girlfriend who is the captain of the cheerleading team. She said yes. Way to go Ian, although quarterback Jared Zabransky did note ""I'm sure it wouldn't have been as romantic if we would have lost".
Since the late Pokey Allen brought BSU into the Division 1, we've had three coaches go on to bigger schools. Dirk Koetter who left for Arizona State was fired the day BSU was invited to the Fiesta Bowl. His ASU team lost their bowl game. Houston Nutt, whom I can't stand, he didn't leave the program like a man, he slipped away in middle of the night (literally). Nutt's Arkansas lost in its bowl game. And the Hawk, Dan Hawkins, who did much for BSU and the football program went to Colorado. They weren't in a bowl game.
Guess it was Coach Pete's year.
